HEART OF THE CUMBERLAND PROVIDES AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE YOU CAN SAFELY EXPRESS WHAT YOU ARE FEELING. IN OUR GROUPS YOU HAVE PERMISSION TO GRIEVE.

Peer Support Groups

Heart of The Cumberland’s peer support groups include individuals who have just begun a journey through grief as well as those whose grief journey continues regardless of how much time has passed since their loss. Peer group facilitators do not provide professional one-on-one counseling. Our trained facilitators foster an environment where you can safely express what you are feeling. In our groups, you have permission to grieve.

There are many amazing ministries here in the Upper Cumberland region who are answering the call to help people, and all of them are foundational pillars in our community. Heart of the Cumberland is addressing the need to help prevent children, teens, and adults from making compromising decisions that lead to regret due to unresolved grief in their lives. We encourage anyone who is grieving to reach out and let Heart of the Cumberland be a source of hope and healing.

UNRESOLVED GRIEF CAN CLOUD PERSPECTIVES, CAUSE DEPRESSION, UNHEALTHY LIFESTYLES, AND DESTRUCTIVE BEHAVIOR.

When the funeral is over and family and friends have gone home, navigating through emotions can be very lonely. Everyone grieves differently and to varying degrees. Not everyone who loses someone will fall victim to the staggering statistics regarding unresolved grief. However, there is information regarding the correlation between grief and addiction for which people should be aware.

Studies show that 83.2% of Substance Use Disorder patients stated that after suffering the loss of a significant person, they increased drug consumption. Other studies show that exposure to Stressful Life Events (SLEs), which include the death of a close friend or relative, divorce, and being neglected or abandoned, seems to strongly increase the risk of becoming drug-addicted (Statistics Source).
